Outdoor Learning- Fresh Air Thursdays

Each Thursday we will be taking our learning outside! There is a lot of research about the benefits of being in nature and learning in the outdoors. It builds a stronger connection to the environment and increases an appreciation and respect for nature. It improves academic achievement through experiential learning and direct observation. It improves creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills. It improves health and well-being. It reduces stress. It increases patience, self-discipline and capacity for attention. It develops stronger social and team work skills. It increases self-esteem and it reduces challenging behaviours. We work on gross motor skills, balance and our vestibular system which is linked positively to gains in focus, attention and academics (such as in letter formation and tracking during reading). Welcome to Kindergarten

We are off to a great start to kindergarten. The past 2 weeks we have learned about active listening, had a mini-project around enticing Pete the Cat to visit us, are developing fine motor skills with magic playdough and have begun a mini-inquiry into lines and shape. We even explored out garden classroom on our first Fesh Air Friday! We are working hard to get to know each other, set routines and make good choices everyday. Student Teacher

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our student teacher, Miss R to our kindergarten classes. This is her second time in a kindergarten classroom and she is in her last year of studies at the University of Calgary. She is excited to be here and build relationships with the children. She will be with us until December 14th so make sure you say hi :)
